Queensland 4x4 Club Chainsaw Training

 

Operate and Maintain Chainsaws (1 day nationally accredited course)

This chainsaw course is part of a nationally recognised qualification conducted by the club with Four Wheel Drive Queensland as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO Code 5286) for our financial members. 

The chainsaw course provides training in the trimming and cutting of felled trees, and chainsaw maintenance.  Emphasis is on felled trees (those that have already fallen over) we do not teach you how to cut them down if still standing.

If you have your own chainsaw you can bring it along for the training.  Ensure that it is in good working order and that you have the manufacturer’s manual with you.  If you have any safety gear bring it along, otherwise it will be supplied.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Prepare for chainsaw maintenance
  • Complete routine and periodic chainsaw maintenance
  • Complete maintenance records
  • Prepare for trimming and cutting
  • Visually assess felled trees
  • Plan cutting
  • Use chainsaw to trim and cut trees
  • Record and report trimming and cutting activities

The course comprises the following components:

Theory

The theory will work through a presentation on chainsaw make up, safety and sawing techniques.  How to assess the structure and environment in order to safely chainsaw. This component takes around 2 hours and is ended with a theory test.

Maintenance

Covers the skills and knowledge required to inspect a chainsaw before use; determine its condition relating to safety and effectiveness of operation; identify and conduct necessary repairs and maintenance, both routine and periodic.  This exercise does not require that the Learner have any specialist mechanical training or qualifications; only demonstrate skill and knowledge at a level that could be considered as a reasonable basic understanding of chainsaw mechanical equipment.  The chainsaw must in a safe condition i.e. safeguards in place and working (particularly chain brake).

Trim and cut felled trees

Covers the skills and knowledge required to plan and carry out chainsaw operation to trim and cut felled trees.  This exercise does not require that the Learner have any specialist mechanical training or qualifications; only demonstrate skill and knowledge at a level that could be considered as a reasonable basic understanding of chainsaw operation.  The skills and knowledge required to implement the techniques described in the training guide issued (i.e. relevant to chainsaw operation) and the material found in the OE Manufacturer’s manual.
